In 1985, in Columbia, a volcano erupted that destroyed the village of Armero. One of the victims of the village was Omayra Sanchez a 13 year old. She was stuck in the clay, mud and water from her own house. Her situation was such that of they did nothing she would die and if they attempted a rescue then it would involve amputation followed by hospitalization, which was not possible because of a lack of proper medical facilities, in which case she would die. For three days she was stuck as the world televised her agony, but it was this photo by Photographer Frank Fournier that shook the world. All she dreamt of during these three days was her school, friends and family. She did eventually die as the world lashed the Columbian government for their negligence and lack of support to the victims.
