Deep in the South of France, Lascaux, is the setting of a series of complex caves famous for their Palaeolithic cave paintings, which are over 17,300 years old. On September 12, 1940, the entrance to Lascaux Cave was discovered by a trio of teenagers who had entered the cave via a long shaft. The cave complex was opened to the public in 1948.
