On rare occasions, the sinker flies from the sea like a stone from a catapult, hence the wisdom of not facing the water as you pull. It is worth modifying the technique on muddy ground. Wind down, then lift the rod tip and hold maximum safe tension long enough for the sinker wires or hooks to cut their way out of the mud in cheese-wire fashion. If the tackle does pop free, wind in at top speed so that you don’t get stuck again.
