Despite its low population of only 2 million residents, Slovenia experiences over 400 suicide deaths every year. Though considered a drop from the record in the 2000s where over 600 deaths from suicide were recorded every year. It ranks in the fifth position with a rate of 21.8 suicide deaths in every 100,000 persons. Like in most countries, alcohol is considered to be the highest risk factor in the country. In 2003, the country established strict alcohol laws with intent to curb the rising cases of suicide. This has borne fruits with a decrease of 12% on the cases reported.
