The infamous Church Rock Uranium Mill Spill caused over a thousand tons of solid radioactive mill waste and 93 million gallons of acidic radioactive tailings solution to flow into the Puerco River. Consequently, radiation levels became 7000 times higher than normal and in 2003, a study found that the river is still contaminated.
