Technically, this film comic legend wasn’t deported so much as exiled from the United States. McCarthyism didn’t look fondly on his movie “Modern Times” and pegged him as a Communist sympathizer. As such, a Mississippi Congressman called for his deportation. He was on vacation at the time and was unable to re-enter the United States until 1972 to accept an Academy Award.
