When they were first spotted in 1995 off the coast of southern Japan, divers couldn’t understand what created these seven-foot diameter underwater crop circles. It was only in 2011 that the culprit was caught: a male pufferfish just five inches long, working hard to create the circles in order to woo females. The gorgeous art work took the male putterfish between a week and 9 days. He created the circles as a love nest so that a female putterfish who approached the circle could decide whether she found him a suitable mate and lay her eggs in the sandy central zone.
