Athens is one of those few Mediterranean cities that doesn’t seem to slow down over winter. Of course, the majority of summer visitors have long since left this ancient city, but there’s plenty of nightlife and other activities to keep you occupied. The city is full of excellent restaurants and cafes, and the Benaki Museum is the perfect place to explore if you’re into art, history and culture. The streets themselves are well worth wandering through on a winter’s day, and must-see historical gems include the Acropolis and the Pantheon – both of which are open throughout winter. Don’t miss the Changing of the Guards at Plateia Syntagmatos on the hour, every hour (particularly if you’re in Athens on a Sunday when the ceremony is at its most traditional and elaborate).
