The religion
Most people who live in the Maltese archipelago are Roman Catholics. You will see beautiful baroque churches all over the islands – even in the smallest villages. According to legend, St Peter baptised some locals at St Peter’s Pool on the southern coast of Malta and the impressive Basilica of Ta’ Pinu on Gozo was built in the 1920s on the site of a chapel where a local woman believed that the Virgin Mary spoke to her. It’s an important centre of pilgrimage for Roman Catholics and numerous miracles have been associated with the church. When visiting the churches and cathedrals, women should cover up bare shoulders (scarves will be supplied in most churches) and both men and women should avoid short shorts.
