Many relationships fall into a pattern where partners have become so comfortable together that they take each other for granted. But it’s not always necessary to go overboard with expensive gifts to show your appreciation. Indeed, as University of Massachusetts Amherst professor Susan Krauss Whitbourne has explained, just saying two simple words more often could dispel any bubbling resentment. In a 2015 Psychology Today article she advised, “Taking someone for granted also includes maybe not saying ‘thank you’ as much as you should because you’ve come to expect favorable treatment.”
