Body dysmorphic disorder is a rare psychiatric condition that is characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imagined or small defect in one’s appearance. While the severity of the disorder varies, it causes many sufferers real emotional distress and can have a devastating impact on their lives. The level of distress an individual with BDD experiences regarding his or her appearance is vastly out of proportion to any real physical “defect” on the face or body.
