The
skin microflora are
microorganisms that are resident on our
skin. Microflora are frequently (and more correctly) called the
skin microbiota or the
skin microbiome. The skin forms an important barrier against microbes from the outside world. In total, you have about 1.8 m
2 of skin, and more than
1.5 trillion (that's a 1 with 12 zeros) bacteria live on it. In some wet places, tens of millions of microbes live on every square centimetre of skin. The human
body is the home of millions of
bacteria. Several
body sites are full of
bacteria and they are especially concentrated in the gut, in the throat and mouth, and on the skin.
