Don't write what's on the radio. Write what you
want to be on the radio. It's fine to follow trends, but when hundreds of people are sending songs in to big artists like Rihanna, yours has to be the one that stands out — which means taking inspiration from everywhere, not just listening to what's already on the charts. When I wrote "Rude Boy" and "S&M," there was nothing else like it. That's why Rihanna picked them up and that's why they turned out to be hits.
