According to a Consumer Reports survey of more than 12,000 subscribers who purchased an extended warranty, nearly 55 percent of owners did not use it for repairs during the lifetime of the policy. The remaining warranty holders spent hundreds more for the coverage than they saved in repair costs even though the average price paid for the coverage was just over $1,200.
