The World Wildlife Fund estimates that, between 2007 and 2013, rhino poaching in South Africa rose from 13 to 1,004, up 7,700%. In 2011, 23 tonnes of illegal ivory was seized, an amount likely to have caused the deaths of 2,500 elephants. Meanwhile, wild tiger numbers have dropped by over 95% since the start of the 20th century, as they are poached for their pelts and for medicine. Due to conservation work, however, for the first time in recent history tiger numbers are rising, showing that all is not lost.
