Chernobyl was once the most terrifying place on Earth; today it's a tourist trap and the subject of an HBO miniseries. But Chernobyl isn't the only place you can go in Russia if you want to experience the joys of nuclear contamination firsthand. There's also Lake Karachay, which is eerily beautiful but only because it's full of radioactive waste. According to Atlas Obscura, the Russians dumped nuclear waste into Lake Karachay from 1951 to 1953.
