He hesitated to say it because he wanted to keep his civilian life separate from his military life; he wants to return to civilian life one day and leave it all behind, and if he brings the two together, he feels he may lose the man he once was.Not only is there a payoff for a main character’s big secret, but that repetition reminds the viewer of some important character information and gives them that much more reason to continue watching.Psychologically speaking, we’re wired to enjoy a certain degree of repetition. Don’t forget to take advantage of this (but if you’re going to repeat, make it good!).
