Awkwardness can become a problem if you have a hard time reading social cues. As a result, you might act in a way that isn’t appropriate for a situation. That can make people feel uncomfortable. Social cues are all those subtle things people do that signal what they are thinking and feeling. For example, if they are pointing their feet toward the door, they may want to get going. Sometimes, a person will say something that has an underlying meaning. For example, “This was really nice” can mean “I’d like to leave soon.” If we don’t pick up on these cues, the situation can get awkward. When we get nervous and focus on ourselves rather than on others, it’s even harder to notice what people are saying.
