He became an adviser to one of his former law professors, Anatoly Sobchak, who eventually left to become chairman of Leningrad's city council and later the city's first democratically elected mayor. Mr Putin became widely known as "Sobchak's fixer" and rumours swirl around some of his activities during this time in St Petersburg.
