Caspian Sea is located at the junction of Europe and Asia, and is called a sea, some say, because its lies on oceanic crust. According to one hypothesis, the Caspian Sea got its name in honor of an ancient horsemen tribe — the Caspians who lived in the southwestern coast of the Caspian Sea and were contemporaries of the Ancient Greeks. The Russian part of the Caspian Sea coast is mostly in Dagestan — the site of periodic violence — and this deters potential tourists.
