Ukrainian Women fighting on the front lines

The prominent role being played by Ukrainian women in the current war effort reflects longstanding traditions of feminism and notions of gender equality that have deep roots in Ukrainian society. In traditional Ukrainian communities, women often faced restrictions in terms of their right to study, divorce, or protect themselves against domestic violence. However, this began to change in the nineteenth century when the first vestiges of a Ukrainian feminist movement emerged alongside the country’s broader national awakening.
