The gaze of history on old Tehran

Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution that toppled its monarchy and paved the way for an Islamic Republic under its supreme leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran is seen by most foreigners as a country of strict rules and intolerance. While it is true that religious law dictates dress codes and certain behaviour, the capital city of Tehran can immediately dispel a traveller’s preconceived notions of the country.
