The Sabrin News Telegram channel, which is closely affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that Ahmadinejad's trip to Guatemala was canceled due to the "precarious political situation" in that country and "reports of potential security concerns." It also said that the Islamic Republic of Iran does not have an embassy in Guatemala and that Israel has “significant influence” in the Latin American country. Reports say Ahmadinejad was set to honor an official invitation from the government and the University of Guatemala to participate in a scientific symposium addressing global water resource management.
