People Living in High-Risk Areas In 2018, 71 percent of leprosy cases were in Southeast Asia. The Americas and Africa represented 15 and 10 percent of new cases, respectively. Meanwhile, the countries with the most new cases were India, Indonesia, and Brazil. In 2017, 14 countries reported at least 1,000 new cases of leprosy, including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Myanmar, Philippines, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.
