Given that a trial of an Iranian national on charges related to the mass executions of 1988 in Sweden is coming to a close, as well as serious allegations that President Ebrahim Raeesi, who became Iran’s president in June 2021, had a role in these crimes, Human Rights Watch has prepared a question and answer document to address the known facts of these mass executions, why the executions should be classified as crimes against humanity, and possible paths to hold the surviving perpetrators accountable.
