Tehran's metro system is clean, cheap and efficient and an ideal way to avoid the traffic snarl above ground. Single journey tickets start at around IR1000 (expect this to change) and can also be bought for 10 journeys or as 1, 3 and 7 day travel cards. There are also monthly, 3-monthly, 6-monthly and annual tickets. Hours of operation on the Tehran metro are from 5.30am to 11pm. Station and train announcements are in Farsi only. Tehran's buses connect with metro stations. Carriages can be extremely packed at peak times; the first, second and last cars are reserved for women. If you are female, use them. Tehran's subway system is a work in progress, and when finally completed (in another decade or so) will be longer than the New York subway. Presently 7 lines are fully in operation. The Tehran metro carries over a million people daily.
