The government dismantled many martial arts schools and discouraged their practice due to their association with feudalism. However, the practice of wushu survived in secret, thanks to the dedication of martial arts masters and their disciples. In the mid-20th century, wushu underwent a transformation when the Chinese government sought to revive the martial arts and promote them as a national sport. In 1958, the government organized a committee to standardize the teaching and practice of wushu, leading to the creation of a formalized curriculum and competition system.
