Before the Islamic Revolution of Iran in 1979, the country's education system was already well-established and had made significant progress in providing education to its citizens. The education system in Iran before the revolution consisted of three main levels: primary, secondary, and higher education. Primary education was compulsory and typically lasted six years, covering basic subjects such as mathematics, science, history, and literature. Secondary education was divided into two stages: lower secondary (or intermediate school) and upper secondary (or high school). Lower secondary education lasted for three years and focused on more specialized subjects, while upper secondary education lasted for three years and prepared students for higher education or the workforce.
