Rise to Power
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Iraq was plagued by political instability and coups d'état. The Ba'ath Party, led by Saddam Hussein and other young radicals, seized power in a coup in 1968. Saddam quickly established himself as one of the most powerful figures in the party and began consolidating his control over the country. One of Saddam's first acts as leader was to purge his rivals and enemies within the party and the military. He ruthlessly eliminated anyone who posed a threat to his rule, including former allies and friends.
