After completing his internship, Cushing spent several years traveling and studying medicine in Europe, where he was exposed to the latest advancements in surgery and medical research. Upon returning to the United States, Cushing joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he worked under the mentorship of the renowned surgeon William Halsted.
