After completing his undergraduate studies at Yale University, Cushing attended Harvard Medical School, where he excelled in his studies and developed a keen interest in surgery. He went on to complete his surgical training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital under the guidance of William Halsted, a pioneer in the field of surgery. It was during his time at Johns Hopkins that Cushing became interested in the emerging field of neurosurgery. In 1901, Cushing joined the faculty at the Johns Hopkins Hospital as a surgeon, where he began to focus his research and clinical practice on neurological disorders.
