The holiday of Purim commemorates their victory and is celebrated with feasting, gift-giving, and the reading of the Megillah, the story of Esther. After their triumph, Esther and Mordechai are said to have lived out their days in the Persian capital of Shushan, modern-day Shush, Iran. When they passed away, they were buried in a traditional Jewish burial ground, known as a kever, in the region. However, the exact location of their graves is a topic of much debate among historians and religious scholars. Some sources claim that Esther and Mordechai were buried in the city of Hamadan, Iran, which has long been associated with the biblical characters.
