Causes of the war:
There were several factors that contributed to the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war. One of the main causes was the territorial disputes between the two countries, particularly over the Shatt al-Arab waterway, a vital trade route for both countries. Additionally, there were religious and ethnic tensions between the predominantly Sunni Iraq and the Shia-majority Iran. The Iranian Revolution of 1979, which brought to power a Shia Islamic government under Ayatollah Khomeini, further exacerbated these tensions.
