Kuru is a prion disease similar to mad cow disease, and it is fatal if left untreated. The Fore have since largely abandoned the practice of cannibalism, but the memory of Kuru still lingers in their community. In the Amazon rainforest, there are several tribes that are known to practice cannibalism, including the Korubo and the Yanomami. These tribes live in remote areas of the rainforest and have minimal contact with the outside world. They view cannibalism as a way to show respect for the spirits of their enemies and to gain strength and protection from their ancestors. One of the last remaining cannibal tribes in Africa is the Korowai people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
