Chouara Tannery in Fes: The Traditional Leather Craftsmanship

Although it’s one of the most authentic cities to visit in Morocco, Fez can surprise you by hitting your smelling senses hard. Notorious for leather-making, if you take a stroll around Chouara tannery, the area stinks not because of leather bags and belts, but also ammonia and rotting flesh. And since the tanning pits are still mediaeval style, till date no air fresheners have been invented to mask the stench.
