Ashura is observed by Shia Muslims in particular, although Sunni Muslims also commemorate the day in different ways. It is a time for reflection, mourning, and solidarity with the suffering of Imam Hussain and his family. Many Muslims fast on this day, as a way to show solidarity with the hardship of the martyrs, and to seek forgiveness and blessings from Allah. During the month of Muharram, Shia Muslims hold processions and gatherings to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. These gatherings include recitations of poetry, sermons, and reenactments of the Battle of Karbala.
