Despite these efforts, the socio-political landscape remained inflamed. The 1986 parliamentary elections saw limited participation as many potential voters were disillusioned with the regime. Nevertheless, the Islamic Republican Party maintained its grip on power, largely due to its control over the election process and the elimination of opponents. Nonetheless, the lack of public enthusiasm for these elections pointed towards growing apathy and a yearning for change.
