The international community has also taken an interest in the situation at Evin Prison. Various governments and human rights organizations have condemned the treatment of prisoners and called for transparency and reform within the Iranian penal system. Sanctions and diplomatic pressures have been applied in an attempt to influence change; however, the Iranian government has often responded defiantly, viewing such actions as foreign interference in its domestic affairs.
