Fluid Management and Urinary Patterns
Although an enlarged prostate can cause urinary frequency and urgency, adequate fluid intake (especially water) is essential for maintaining kidney health and preventing urinary tract infections. However, managing the timing of fluid intake, particularly in the evening and before bedtime, can help reduce frequent nighttime awakenings for urination. It's advisable to reduce fluid intake a few hours before sleep. Furthermore, avoiding or reducing the consumption of diuretic and bladder-irritating beverages like caffeine (in coffee and tea) and alcohol is very important, as these substances can stimulate the bladder and increase the urge to urinate. Bladder training and attempting to urinate at regular intervals, even if no immediate urge is felt, can also help prevent overfilling of the bladder and pressure on the prostate.
