With the backing of the United States, Britain escalated its efforts to remove Mossadegh from power. The turning point came in August 1953, when a CIA-led operation, codenamed Operation Ajax, orchestrated a coup d'état. The plan involved a series of strategic maneuvers, including bribing officials, paying protesters to create unrest, and ultimately convincing a reluctant Shah to issue a decree dismissing Mossadegh. The coup, which initially failed, succeeded on its second attempt, and Mossadegh’s government was violently overthrown.
