The U.S. government began investigating Gowadia after financial transactions and shipping documents flagged him to officials. The FBI and Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) arrested him in October 2005 on a criminal complaint alleging he willfully communicated national defense information to unauthorized parties. A search of his Hawaii residence revealed a massive cache of evidence—over 500 pounds of documents, including visibly marked classified materials, computers, and thumb drives containing sensitive data. Investigators alleged that Gowadia had attempted to sell or had provided classified design information to individuals and businesses in multiple countries, including China, Germany, Israel, and Switzerland, highlighting a pervasive and calculated pattern of illegal activity.
