A very noticeable and common post-operative side effect is the formation of crusting and scabs 🩹 on the scalp, particularly at the recipient site. These crusts are a natural result of dried blood and tissue fluid settling around the newly implanted grafts. It's crucial not to scratch or pick at these, as doing so can dislodge the delicate grafts or lead to infection. Accompanying the scabbing is often itching (pruritus), which signifies that the healing process is underway. While tempting, scratching must be avoided, and patients are usually advised to manage the itchiness with gentle washing or saline sprays recommended by their surgeon.
