Less common systemic reactions can also occur. These include excessive bleeding from the donor or recipient sites, which can sometimes lead to the formation of large collections of blood under the skin (hematomas). Very rarely, patients might experience unexplained episodes like persistent hiccups or adverse allergic reactions to the local anaesthetics used during the procedure, which can, in exceptional circumstances, be life-threatening and require emergency intervention.
