9. Public Disillusionment and the Clerical Class
The scale of alleged corruption among the governing clerical and political class has generated profound disillusionment among the Iranian populace, many of whom supported the revolution based on its promise of an ethical, non-materialistic government. The visible gap between the hardline rhetoric of social justice and the luxurious lifestyles and wealth accumulation of many officials and their families—the aforementioned Aghazadeh—has significantly damaged the social legitimacy of the clerical establishment. This economic injustice remains a primary, underlying driver of public protests and anti-government sentiment.
