Rumi’s poetry is also the foundation of the Mevlevi Order of Sufism, famously known as the Whirling Dervishes. Following Rumi’s death, his followers organized his practices into a formal ritual known as the Sema. This meditative dance, where dervishes spin in rhythmic circles, is a physical manifestation of Rumi’s theology. The spinning represents the planets revolving around the sun and the soul’s journey toward truth and love. As they whirl, one hand reaches toward heaven to receive divine grace, while the other points toward the earth to distribute that grace to humanity, embodying the role of the mystic as a conduit for peace.
