One of the most common secondary causes of Restless Legs Syndrome is iron deficiency. Even if an individual does not have severe anemia, low iron stores in the brain can interfere with dopamine production and lead to RLS symptoms. Other chronic diseases such as kidney failure, diabetes, and nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) are also linked to this syndrome. Moreover, the use of certain medications, such as anti-nausea drugs, antidepressants, and some cold medicines containing older antihistamines, can significantly increase the severity of leg restlessness.
