One of the most common side effects of ibuprofen and similar drugs is their direct impact on the gastrointestinal tract. The prostaglandins suppressed by these drugs normally stimulate the secretion of protective mucus and bicarbonate in the stomach to shield the lining from powerful gastric acid. Without this defense, stomach acid begins to erode the internal wall, leading to heartburn, gastritis, and in severe cases, the development of peptic ulcers and hidden internal bleeding that may remain asymptomatic until a crisis occurs.
