Primal Spirits: New Research Explores the Evolutionary Roots of Alcohol Consumption in Great Apes

A new study has now gathered fresh data on alcohol consumption by examining urine samples from wild chimpanzees. Researcher Aleksey Maro from UC Berkeley and integrative biologist Robert Dudley had previously estimated that the amount of alcohol in the fermented fruits these animals consume is equivalent to about two standard alcoholic drinks (14 grams of pure alcohol).
