One possible reason: Progesterone levels drop off during menopause. “Progesterone is a sleep-promoting hormone,” says Wellman. Changing levels of estrogen during menopause can also cause sleep disruptions by bringing on hot flashes, sudden waves of intense body heat, and sweating.
