Today the Worldwatch Institute in Washington D.C. says Lake Karachay is the most polluted spot on Earth — it covers a much smaller area than the Chernobyl disaster and yet the level of radioactivity in both places is pretty much equal. If you tried to swim in Lake Karachay you'd receive a lethal dose of radiation after roughly one hour.
